Global Forest Watch — Small Grants 2017. Global Forest Watch (GFW) is an interactive online forest monitoring and alert system designed to empower people with the information they need to better manage and conserve forest landscapes. The Small Grants Fund provides financial and technical support to non-profit NGOs that want to use Global Forest Watch in their research, advocacy, and fieldwork. The specific focus in 2017 is use of GFW’s GLAD alerts and/or VIIRS fire alerts to enhance local responses to forest threats. Eligibility for grants extends to civil society organizations for projects in selected countries of Southeast Asia, Central Africa, and South America. Grants range between US$10 thousand and US$40 thousand. The deadline for submissions is 15 April 2017. Link

AuthorAID — Online Course on Grant Proposals and Research Writing. AuthorAID announces an open and free online course to help early-career researchers in developing countries improve their research writing and proposal development. Topics in the course will include literature review; publication ethics; making a research plan; writing a grant proposal; targeting the right journals; and writing and publishing a research paper. The online course will span eight weeks from April through June 2017. The deadline for registration is 18 April 2017. Link

L’Oreal Foundation — Fellowships for Women Scientists. The L’Oreal Foundation announces the 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science Fellowships” for doctoral and post-doctoral women scientists in several world regions. The available fellowships, eligibility requirements, and application periods are determined by region and/or country. Application deadlines in 2017 are as follows: Brazil, 08 April; Sub-Saharan Africa, 19 April; Maghreb Region, 29 May; Russia, 15 July; China, 31 July; and Vietnam, 31 July. Information for additional countries will be posted later (e.g., India, Philippines, and possibly others). Applicants need to consult application details on a world map. Link

Central African Network of Forestry and Environmental Training Institutions — Scholarships for Forest Management in the Congo Basin. The Central African Network of Forestry and Environmental Training Institutions (RIFFEAC) will award masters and doctoral scholarships in support of sustainable management of Congo Basin forests (PREREDD+ Project). Eligible countries are Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Gabon, Dem Rep Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, and Sao Tome and Principe. United Nations University — ProSPER.Net Leadership Program 2017. The UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability is the Secretariat for ProSPER.Net (Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network) in the Asia-Pacific region. The ProSPER.Net Leadership Programme helps its participants to develop interdisciplinary skills for sustainable development initiatives in local, regional, or global contexts. The fifth leadership program will be convened in Thailand in June-July 2017. The deadline for applications is 20 April 2017. Link

Lincoln Institute of Land Policy — Fellowships on Land Policy and Urban Development in Latin America. The Program on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy invites applications for its 2017 thesis fellowships. Fellowships will be awarded in the amounts of US$5 thousand for master’s theses, and US$10 thousand for doctoral theses, to students at universities in Latin America and North America who are in the mid to final stages of their thesis work. Thematic areas include one on environment and climate change. The deadline for applications (Spanish, English) is 24 April 2017. Link

Inter-American Development Bank — Regional Public Goods. The IDB calls for proposals on regional public goods that have the potential to generate significant shared benefits and positive spillover effects from country to country and sector to sector. Proposals that address cross-cutting issues, such as climate change and environmental sustainability (among other themes), are particularly welcomed. Projects should be tri-national, or exceptionally bi-national. Grants normally range from US$ 500 thousand to US$1 million. Counterpart resources are required from the participating countries. The deadline for proposals (English, Spanish) is 26 April 2017. Link

Research Council of Norway — Research Exchanges and Events Related to Climate Change. Norway’s Large-scale Climate Programme (KLIMAFORSK) is a 10-year initiative on climate research. To foster international cooperation, the program supports Norwegians traveling internationally, international researchers visiting Norway, and events that promote the KLIMAFORSK objectives. Applications are submitted by Norwegian institutions. The application deadline is 26 April 2017. Link

Campus France — Research in the Maghreb 2018. Partenariats Hubert Curien (PHC) du Maghreb will support research cooperation between France and Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia on addressing climate change in the Mediterranean region. Projects are for three years. The announcement includes contact information in each participating country. The closing date for applications is 27 April 2017. Link

UK Natural Environment Research Council — Fellowships in Green Urban Infrastructure. The UK’s NERC invites applications for Knowledge Exchange Fellowships that address issues and opportunities around green infrastructure in urban areas of the UK or developing countries. The objective is to influence local policymakers and businesses to support the development of urban green zones, urban ecosystem services, sustainable drainage systems, and other examples of green infrastructure. Eligibility to apply extends to applicants based in UK higher education institutions, and to NERC research centres and independent research organisations approved by NERC (if the science the work builds on was funded by NERC). Private, public, and third-sector organisations are eligible as end users and as partners in proposals. The deadline for applications is 27 April 2017. Link

World Academy of Sciences — Short Course on Science and Diplomacy. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) seek candidates for the third AAAS-TWAS course on science and diplomacy to be held in Trieste, August 2017. This 5-day course is for young scientists whose work has brought them into the international policy-making arena; policymakers interested in science-based themes that might influence their work; administrators of research institutions; and research funders focused on building international networks. Travel, accommodation, and visa expenses will be provided to the selected participants. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are due by 30 April 2017. Link

French Global Environment Facility — Grants for Conservation and Climate in West and Central Africa. In partnership with IUCN, the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) announces the 5th phase of the Small-Scale Initiatives Programme to fund NGO projects on biodiversity conservation and the fight against climate change in 12 countries of West and Central Africa. The maximum grant is €45 thousand for projects of up to 18 months. Applicants need to provide 25-50% of total project costs. The closing date to submit proposals (French, English) is 01 May 2017. Link

European Commission — Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development in South America. The EC will make grants in support of forest conservation and sustainable development in the region of dry forests, chaco, cerrado, and pantanal regions corresponding to ZICOSUR in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Project activities should focus on ecosystem conservation; support for sustainable economic development; strengthening of environmental governance; and provision of local services such as community water supply. Grants will range from €1 million to €2.5 million, varying with cost shares. Eligibility for funding extends to civil society organizations established in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland — Scotland’s Grants for Zambia and Rwanda. The Scottish Government announces the 2017 round of funding for its Zambia and Rwanda development programs. The focus regions are Central Province in Zambia, and Western and Southern Provinces in Rwanda. Among the priority themes are agriculture, and renewable energy as a component in other priority themes. Applications are restricted to Scottish-based organizations. The closing date for submitting concept notes is 04 May 2017. Link

U.S. Agency for International Development — Reforestation in Haiti. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) calls for applications for a five-year project to address environmental degradation and loss of tree cover in Haiti. The objective is to provide environmental services in targeted forest areas in support of food security and resilience. Eligibility for funding is unrestricted. Funding Opportunity SOL-521-17-000011. Access Power — Renewable Energy in Africa. Access Power is a developer, owner, and operator of power projects in emerging markets, focusing on Africa and the Middle East. The 2017 edition of the Access Co-Development Facility (ACF) will provide US$7 million to support up to three projects in renewable energy in Africa. Submitted projects must be located in Africa; use a commercially proven technology for power generation; and be based on renewable energy or hybrid power generation. Short-listed applicants will take part in a final selection round in Copenhagen during the Africa Energy Forum (June 2017). The submission period closes on 08 May 2017. Link

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences — Research Fellowships 2017. JIRCAS provides fellowships to researchers in developing countries to collaborate with Japanese counterparts for research in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. “Tsukuba” fellowships are carried out at the JIRCAS headquarters in Japan. “Okinawa” fellowship research is carried out at the Tropical Agricultural Research Front in Okinawa. “Project Site” fellowships are at research institutes in the developing countries where JIRCAS collaborative research projects are being implemented. The deadline for applications is 08 May 2017. Link

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission — Distance Learning for Masters Courses in the UK 2017. The Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships support distance learning Master’s degree courses offered in partnership with local providers in developing countries, as well as courses delivered directly by UK universities. The available offerings include tropical forestry; veterinary medicine; environmental management; conservation and wildlife management; risk and disaster management; and others. Eligibility for support extends to Commonwealth citizens of developing Commonwealth countries, refugees, and British protected persons. Applicants must be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country and meet the entry educational requirements. The application deadline is 12 May 2017. Link

Reed Elsevier — Environmental Challenge in Water and Sanitation 2017. The Reed Elsevier company sponsors the RELX Group Environmental Challenge to recognize projects worldwide that best demonstrate sustainable access to safe water and/or access to improved sanitation. The challenge is open to individuals and organizations (profit and non-profit). Projects must advance sustainable access to safe water where it is presently at risk, and/or access to improved sanitation. The first prize is US$50 thousand; second prize is US$25 thousand. The submission deadline is 15 May 2017. Link

Wildlife Acoustics — Grant Program. Wildlife Acoustics aims to advance the conservation of animals through bio-acoustics recording technology. The Wildlife Acoustics Scientific Product Grant Program offers US$5 thousand of product-in-kind grants to biologists, researchers, conservationists, and students who work for charitable, educational, and other tax-exempt organizations. There are no geographical limitations. The next application deadlines are 15 May 2017 and 15 August 2017. Link

Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund — Conservation in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. The CEPF invites letters of inquiry (LOI) to empower local communities to engage in conservation and management of key biodiversity areas in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam. A separate announcement invites LOIs for similar objectives in Myanmar. Both calls are open to NGOs, community groups, private companies, and other civil society organizations for large and small grants. Applicants for small grants (up to US$20 thousand) can apply in English or local languages (Burmese, Chinese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, or Vietnamese). Applicants for large grants can apply in English only. The deadline for receiving LOIs is 19 May 2017. Link

Earth Journalism Network — InfoCongo. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering grants of up to US$1,500 for stories about pressing issues in the Congo Basin. The main focus is to show the impacts of environmental change on human lives and ecosystems. For this reason, EJN prioritizes stories about forests, water, climate change, wildlife, extractive industries, conflicts, and crimes. Proposals should focus on the production of one or more story, map, or data visualization element. The deadline for applications (English, French) is 20 May 2017. Link

CCRIF — Postgraduate Studies in Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean. CCRIF SPC (Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility) serves the Wider Caribbean Region in reducing the economic impact of natural catastrophes. As a part of its program, the facility provides scholarships to students at the post-graduate level to pursue study in areas related to disaster risk management. Eligibility extends to citizens of CARICOM member countries and/or CCRIF member countries in the Caribbean. The scholarships are valued at a maximum of US$40 thousand at extra-regional universities, and US$20 thousand at regional universities. The deadline for applications is 22 May 2017. Link

U.S. Department of State — ADAPT Africa. The ADAPT-Africa project aims to increase actions needed at national- and subnational levels in African countries to attract investment that builds resilience to climate change. Interested organizations are expected to propose activities according to their organization’s strengths and experience. The relevant countries are Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia. Eligibility for funding extends to U.S. non-profit NGOs and for-profit organizations, non-profit organizations in other countries, educational institutions, and public international organizations. The closing date is 22 May 2017. Link

Association of African Universities — Practical Skills for African University Students. With financial support from the government of Sweden, the AAU will make grants of up to US$600 per person to help post-graduate university students acquire practical skills via internships of 12-24 weeks. The grants are for training purposes only, not for the completion of theses or dissertations. The program is open to students in AAU member institutions. The deadline for applications (English, French) is 23 May 2017. Link

German Federal Ministry of Education and Research — Green Talents Competition 2017. “Green Talents” annually makes awards to individuals worldwide for their original solutions for a more sustainable future. The winning applicants are invited to a two-week science forum and networking program in Germany, followed by the opportunity of a return visit to conduct research in Germany. Past winners include many in renewable energy, water management, and environmental engineering. The application period is 10 April though 23 May 2017. Link

Research Council of Norway — NORGLOBAL-2 and Sustainable Development Goals. The Research Council of Norway invites proposals addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The call has a special emphasis on global education, but is also open to other themes — including the environment, climate, and renewable energy. Norwegian research institutes, universities, and university colleges are invited to apply for funding. Proposals should include leading international development researchers and researchers from developing countries, when relevant. The application deadline is 24 May 2017. Link

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences — International Awards for Young Agricultural Researchers 2017. JIRCAS makes awards of US$5 thousand to each of up to three young agricultural researchers in developing countries who contribute to outstanding research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related themes. Candidates need to be younger than age 40. The deadline for applications is 26 May 2017. Link

Slovak Republic — Slovak Government Scholarships 2017-2018. As part of its program of official development assistance, the Slovak Republic annually awards scholarships to support qualified international students for studies at Slovak universities. The fields of study include ecological and environmental sciences; agriculture, forestry, and veterinary medicine; water resources management; and several others. Eligible countries for scholarships are Afghanistan, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kenya, Kosovo, Moldova, Mongolia, Palestinian Territories, Ukraine, and Vietnam. The application period is 29 March through 30 May 2017. Link

European Marine Research Network — EuroMarine Call for Proposals 2017. EuroMarine announces funding to support workshops, working groups, and training and capacity building in themes of marine conservation and management. Proposals should engage at least three EuroMarine full member organizations in two or more countries. Member organizations include some in the developing world, e.g., Morocco, Peru, South Africa, Tunisia, and Turkey. The application deadline for fellowships is 28 April 2017. The deadline for workshops and working groups is 31 May 2017. Link

International Center for Climate Governance — Best Climate Practices. The Best Climate Practices contest for 2017 focuses on actionable ideas and concrete projects to support urban and/or rural communities in preparing and responding to climate disasters, improving local resilience through enhanced preparedness (ex-ante), and/or capacity to recover (ex-post).The contest is open to individuals, teams, or organizations regardless of nationality, age, or qualifications. The contest winner will be awarded €3 thousand. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2017. Link

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund — PhD Studies in India in Ecology and Environment. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund offers scholarships to Indian nationals and nationals of other Asian countries for doctoral studies at universities in India. Areas of specialization include ecology and environment (among others). Scholarship applicants must already be admitted for a Ph.D. degree at a recognized institution of higher education in India. The application period to the Fund is April-May, with a deadline of 31 May. Link

Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World — Postgraduate Training Fellowships 2017. OWSD supports female scientists with doctoral fellowships in the natural sciences in 66 developing countries where capacity in science and technology is significantly lagging. The fellowships are for the pursuit of a doctoral degree at a host institution in a developing country, but not in the applicant’s home country. Applicants should be qualified young women science graduates (generally below 40 years of age), who have an M.Sc. degree or outstanding B.Sc. in the natural sciences. The eligible scientific fields include agricultural sciences; biological systems and organisms; and many others. The application period is 19 April through 31 May 2017. Link

Fondation Yves Rocher — Photography Award, Environment and the Planet 2017. The Yves Rocher Foundation’s Photography Award shall be awarded to a professional photographer who wishes to make a journalistic study of issues relating to the environment, humanity’s relationship with the planet, or the core challenges to sustainability. Eligibility extends to professional photojournalists who are able to write and speak in French or English. The winner will receive an award of €8 thousand. The closing date for applications is 01 June 2017. Link

IUCN-Oceania — Small Grants for Energy in the Pacific Islands. The Energy Small Grants Programme provides funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency in participating countries of the Oceania region. These energy projects should be coupled with strong linkages to biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. Applications are invited from communities, civil society organisations, and private enterprises. The participating countries are Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Funding is up to US$20 thousand. The deadline for applications is 01 June 2017. Link

World Academy of Sciences — Prizes for Young Scientists in Developing Countries. TWAS provides financial assistance to national institutions in several developing countries to enable them to institute a scheme of TWAS prizes for young scientists. Candidates for the prizes should be no older than age 40 at the time of winning the prize; hold at least a master’s degree; have a good record of research publications in internationally recognized journals; and be living and working in the country of the awarding organization. Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged. The participating countries are: Bangladesh,Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Iran, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand,Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Vietnam The amount of the prize is US$2 thousand. The awarding organizations should send a complete profile of the selected nominees to TWAS before 01 June 2017. Link

 

Africa Food Prize — Calling for Nominations 2017. Co-sponsored by the Alliance for a Green Revolution and Yara International, the Africa Food Prize honors outstanding contributions to agriculture and food production in the challenge to combat hunger and reduce poverty in Africa. The Prize can be awarded for a specific contribution or achievement, or for a series of efforts and results within the last few years. Nominations are open to qualified candidates irrespective of their nationalities, professions, or locations. The Prize is US$100 thousand (to be shared if there is more than one winner), a diploma, and a trophy. The deadline for nominations (English, French) is 05 June 2017. Link

Flemish Inter-University Council — Calls for Proposals 2018-2019. VLIR-UOS is the secretariat of Flemish universities for development cooperation, with funding by Belgian Development Cooperation. VLIR-UOS announces cooperation activities for 2018-2019 between its member universities and partner universities and networks in the developing world. The partner countries are Bolivia, Cambodia, Cuba, DR Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, Nicaragua, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. Current calls include the TEAM and South Initiatives, each with a deadline on 12 May 2017. The International Training Programmes have deadlines between 05 June and 16 June 2017, varying with the university association. Link

Science for People and Nature Partnership — Call for Proposals 2017. In support of the United Nations agenda on sustainable development, the Science for People and Nature Partnership (SNAPP) aims to find solutions for problems at the interface of economic development, nature conservation, and human well-being. SNAPP operates through working groups that represent 200 institutions from more than 30 countries. The Partnership’s 2017 request for proposals calls for additional working groups to fill gaps in knowledge. Proposals are invited from researchers and practitioners of any nationality affiliated with an academic, governmental, multilateral, or non-profit institution. Individuals operating independently are also eligible to apply. Proposals from low- and middle-income countries are especially welcome. The deadline for proposals is 07 June 2017. Link

British Council — Newton Fund for International Science Collaboration with the UK. The Newton Fund promotes partnerships between researchers in the UK and researchers in developing and emerging economies through workshop grants, travel grants, and grants to link institutions. The Newton Fund announces current collaboration opportunities with Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Eligible subject areas include agriculture, climate and environment, sustainable energy, reduction of disaster risks, and others. Proposals have a principal applicant from the UK and a principal applicant from the partner country. The closing date for submissions is 13 June 2017. Link

 

United States – India Educational Foundation — Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships. The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are for Indian scholars who are registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution. The fellowships are for six to nine months at institutions in the USA in fields that include agricultural sciences; energy studies; urban and regional planning (with emphasis on smart cities and waste management); materials science (with emphasis on environmental applications); and others. The application deadline is 15 June 2017. Link

Zoological Society of London — EDGE Fellowships 2017. ZSL’s EDGE of Existence Program provides fellowships for two-year projects in research and conservation of EDGE (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered)mammals, amphibians, corals, and birds. The program is open to early-career conservation biologists who are nationals or residents of the country in which the EDGE species occur. The focus in 2017 is EDGE species in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Pacific Islands. EDGE Fellows receive a grant of up to £10 thousand; an opportunity to attend two regional training courses and to undertake online modules in relevant topics; and one-to-one support from a scientific advisor. The application deadline is 16 June 2017. Link

International Tropical Timber Organization — Freezailah Fellowships 2017. ITTO makes grants through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund for training opportunities, demonstration tours, participation in conferences and workshops, preparation of technical papers, and post-graduate degrees. Grants up to US$10 thousand are in support of sustainable tropical forest management. Applicants are young and mid-career professionals in ITTO’s member countries; most grants are to individuals in the developing countries. The next application deadline is 20 June 2017. Link

Toyota Foundation — International Grant Program for East and Southeast Asia. The Toyota Foundation supports projects focusing on challenges and issues shared among Japan and other Asian countries. The themes for 2017 are multi-generational and multi-cultural Inclusion in communities; and creating a common platform for new culture in Asia. There is also an “open field” for additional subjects (for example, the Foundation has previously funded grants on sustainable energy). Eligible countries are Brunei, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam. Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund — Krill Fishing and Marine Ecosystem. The Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund (AWR) calls for proposals from scientific researchers who can aid in determining the impact of the krill fishing industry on the Antarctic marine ecosystem. MASHAV — International Professional Courses 2017. Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) offers short courses in Israel in subject areas of agriculture, climate change, and related themes. Courses are available in English, Spanish, Russian, and French. Courses in English include one on Clean Technologies from 27 August through 20 September. For most courses, MASHAV offers a limited number of scholarships to cover course fees, accommodation, medical insurance, and other expenses in Israel (but not international airfare). New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre — Postdoctoral Fellowship in Livestock Emissions Research. The government of New Zealand sponsors LEARN as a program to build international capability in livestock emissions research. LEARN currently invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships of one to two years from technical staff and scientists in developing countries who will work with New Zealand colleagues. Applicants need the collaborative support of a New Zealand host organization, which will administer the funds. Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Staff Exchanges with Lilongwe University. RUFORUM announces support for seven staff exchanges at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The goal of the fellowships is to provide opportunities for academics from outside Malawi to enhance faculty teaching, research, and collaboration at LUANAR. Science and ScienceLab — Prize for Young Scientists. The Science and SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists offers prizes based on thesis research. Recent doctoral graduates in the life sciences may submit a 1000-word essay based on their thesis work. Four winners, in different categories, will be selected. One of the categories is Ecology and Environment. The prize will be awarded without regard to sex, race, or nationality. The winners will be published by Science, and will receive up to US$30 thousand in prize money. The application deadline is 15 July 2017. Link

Wildlife Conservation Network — Networking Opportunities at the Wildlife Conservation Expo. Each year, the WCN organizes conservation events (expos) in the USA, where wildlife conservationists discuss issues about endangered species around the world. Non-profit organizations are able to request free exhibition space at these events, offering them opportunities for networking and publicity. The remaining expo in 2017 will be held in San Francisco in October. Applications for exhibition space will be accepted through 15 July 2017. Link

 

Swedish International Development Agency — Training in Strategic Environmental Assessment. Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. The Africa program includes a course on strategic environmental assessment, with a focus on energy. Participants may be nominated by organizations and agencies within the energy sector that work actively with energy plans, policies, and programmes at national or regional levels. The following countries are invited to nominate candidates: Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. The training will be provided in two parts, first in Sweden and then to be decided. Brevard Zoo — Grants for Wildlife Conservation. The Brevard Zoo Conservation Fund supports projects in wildlife conservation through surcharges paid by zoo visitors and members. Nine projects in international wildlife conservation are chosen each year for funding of from US$2 thousand to US$7 thousand per project. Applications are open to non-profit conservation and research organizations. The application deadline is 01 August 2017. Note: Additionally, the Brevard Zoo Wildlife Emergency Fund provides emergency funding up to US$2,500 to address severe and time-sensitive threats to wildlife, accepting applications at any time. Erbacher Foundation — Support for Rural Development. The Erbacher Foundation supports rural development in subject areas that include livestock husbandry, crop production, drinking water, and environmental protection. The priority countries are India, Tanzania, and Uganda. Applications are invited from Germany charitable organizations involved in development cooperation. Applying organizations need to have partnerships with local NGOs. The German institution is responsible for project administration and coordination. Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation — Grants 2019. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation makes grants for global environmental stability in themes of climate change, energy, biodiversity, access to water, and the fight against desertification. In each grants cycle, the Foundation defines priority focus areas within these themes. The geographical scope of grant making comprises the Mediterranean Basin, the Polar Regions, and the Least-Developed Countries. Grants do not exceed 50% of a project budget. The next period for submitting pre-proposals (French, English) is 03 July 2017 through 11 August 2017. Link 

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science — RONPAKU Fellowships for PhD Students 2018. The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees at Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow’s home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU will award about 20 fellowships across all subject areas. The application deadline is 25 August 2017 for submissions to RONPAKU from Japanese universities; applicants need to send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisors in advance of this deadline. Link

Loro Parque Fundación — Conservation Grants 2018. Loro Parque Fundación supports conservation projects that mainly focus on parrots and marine species. The Foundation aims to improve the conservation status of endangered species as well as to promote conservation of terrestrial and marine biodiversity. Neotropical Ornithological Society — François Vuilleumier Grants. The Francois Vuilleumier Fund awards one or more cash grants per year for thesis studies of neotropical birds to one or several graduate students from any country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Erik Hosking Charitable Trust — Writing, Photos, and Art about Birds and Natural History. The Erik Hosking Trust supports projects of scientific and conservation value on birds and other subjects of natural history through the media of writing, photography, painting, and illustration. Grants of up to £750 may be awarded to suitable candidates from any country. The application deadline is 30 September each year. Link

Tree Fund — Funding for Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. The Jack Kimmel International Grant Program makes grants to researchers in arboriculture and urban forestry worldwide. Projects of one to three years are funded to a maximum of US$10 thousand. The application deadline is 01 October of each year. Link

U.S. Department of State — Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program supports non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the U.S. for experienced professionals from countries that are undergoing development or political transition. Fellows are hosted at universities in the USA. Program fields include agriculture and rural development; natural resources, environmental policy, and climate change; and many others. Applications are made through the U.S. Embassies or Binational Fulbright Commissions in eligible countries, with varying deadlines. The embassies and commissions submit their nominations before 01 October to the Institute of International Education office in Washington, DC. Link

World Academy of Sciences — South-South Research and Advanced Training 2017. TWAS offers fellowships to young scientists in developing countries to enable them to spend three to twelve months at a research institution in a developing country other than their own. Eligibility extends to young scientists in any area of the natural sciences who are citizens of a developing country, and who are employed by a research institution in a developing country. The host institution is expected to provide accommodation and food as well as research facilities. TWAS provides the airfare and a subsistence allowance. The application deadline is 01 October 2017. Borlaug Global Rust Initiative — Award for Women in Wheat Research 2017. The BGRI offers the Jeanie Borlaug Laube award for the professional development of women working on wheat research during the early stages of their careers. The award is intended to help cover costs associated with attending the BGRI workshop and a training program at CIMMYT in Obregon, Mexico. The application deadline is 30 October 2017. Link

Asian Waterbirds Conservation Fund — Protection of Migratory Waterbirds. Administered by WWF Hong Kong, the Asian Waterbirds Conservation Fund supports the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their wetland habitats in the East Asian – Australasian flyway. Grants are up to US$5 thousand per program or project. The application deadline is 31 October of each year. Link

UNESCO World Heritage Center — Requests for International Assistance 2018. Grants under the World Heritage Convention are to help protect the World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites. Requests must be transmitted by a State Party National Commission for UNESCO or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, or an appropriate governmental department or ministry. The limits on funding vary with the type of request (e.g., technical cooperation, training and research, promotion and education, preparatory assistance, emergency assistance). Instrumentl — Grants for Wildlife, Marine Sciences, and Plant Sciences. Instrumentl is a team of former nonprofit development staff, scientists, and software engineers who share the aim of helping researchers to find and apply for grants. The focus is researchers within the ecological and environmental sciences. Instrumental has compiled a list of research grants that have application deadlines during the next few months, April-October 2017. American Museum of Natural History — Ornithology Research. The Frank M. Chapman Memorial Fund supports ornithological research anywhere in the world. There is one competition per year for fellowships and two categories of grants. Most grants range from US$500 to US$2 thousand. Fellowships are for 1-2 years of research in avian systematics, evolution, and biogeography in residence at the American Museum of Natural History. The application deadline is 15 November each year. Link

Energy and Environmental Partnership Mekong — Support for Project Preparation. The Energy and Environment Partnership Programme with the Mekong Region (EEP Mekong) is funded by Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs to improve access to sustainable energy in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. EEP Mekong offers grants to facilitate project preparation in the participating countries. The focus of preparation support will be feasibility studies on clean energy, particularly bioenergy and W2E projects, in both the public and private sectors. Other types of preparation support (cost-benefit analysis, environmental impact studies, etc.) will be considered case-by-case. EEP Mekong will fund up to 80% of the feasibility studies or other preparation costs. Proposed projects should have a minimum capital investment of €500 thousand. Volvo Environment Prize — Nominations Invited for the Prize in 2018. The Volvo Environment Prize is for innovations which in broad terms fall within the environmental field. The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation invites universities, research institutes, scientists, engineers, as well as other individuals and organizations to submit nominations. Priority is given to an individual or to a group of named individuals. Past laureates have included leaders in fields such as global change, biodiversity, energy efficiency, and others. The Prize consists of a diploma, sculpture, and cash award for SEK 1.5 million. The next deadline for nominations is 10 January 2018. Link

ADM’s corporate social investment program “ADM Cares” makes grants in themes of agricultural development, sound environmental practices, education for children and young adults, and maintaining vibrant communities. Grant seekers fill out an online application to describe their organization, contact information, and request for funding. There is no calendar deadline. Link

Ecologia — The Virtual Foundation. Ecologia aims to build global connections that create civil society and support environmental, social, and economic sustainability. In support of these objectives, Ecologia established the Virtual Foundation to raise financial contributions over the internet, and to steer this funding towards project implementers in partner countries. The partner countries are Argentina, Belarus, China, Georgia, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgzstan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Russia, São Tome and Principe, Sri Lanka, and Tajikistan. Grants are up to US$5 thousand, with preference for projects under US$2 thousand. There is no calendar deadline. Link

Cornell University and CTA — TEEAL Agricultural Database. The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library (TEEAL)is a full-text and searchable database of articles from high-quality research journals in agriculture and related sciences, housed at Cornell University in the USA. TEEAL is an offline tool, not requiring internet or a phone line. For eligible universities and research institutions in low-income EU-ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific), CTA in the Netherlands will provide the initial investment for the TEEAL base collection (equivalent to US$5 thousand) and the update in the following year. Applications can be made in English or French. Link

Foundation Future of the Carbon Market — Markets for Carbon Emissions. The Foundation “Future of the Carbon Market” (Stiftung Zukunft des Kohlenstoffmarktes) promotes a market-based approach at a program level to reduce carbon emissions in developing countries. The program approach relies on start-up finance generated by the sale of tradable emissions certificates, combined with national policies and incentives favorable to emissions reductions. The Foundation posts funding guidelines and application forms, one for funding through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and another for funding external to the CDM. Proposals are reviewed continuously. Link

Lush Retail, Inc. — Animal Protection, Environment, and Human Rights. Lush makes grants through a Charity Pot to small grassroots organizations for projects in environment, animal protection, and human rights. It prefers to support projects which aim to change opinion and behavior through raising awareness of issues, activism, and education and campaigning. Grants are a maximum of US$25 thousand per project. Applicants study the Charity Pot guidelines and send an email to request an application form. Link

Melania Development Foundation — Support to Grassroots Womens’ Groups. Melania focuses on self-help projects which contribute to the improvement of the social, economic, and cultural position of women in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. Subject areas include agriculture, natural environment, and several others. Melania invites and reviews project applications. Melania selects and proposes some of these projects to Dutch women’s groups for requested financial support. There is no calendar deadline. Link

Mekong Region Land Governance — Quick Disbursement Fund. The Mekong Region Land Governance Project aims to support appropriate land policies and practices in the Mekong Region to reduce poverty, improve nutrition, increase economic development, and support family farmers. The Quick Disbursement Fund provides grants up to US$50 thousand over six months for urgent actions to defend land rights, support customary tenure, and to address related issues. The participating countries are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Link

Purley Overseas Trust — Grassroots Development. The Purley Overseas Trust aims to address the problems of deprivation in the developing world by supporting grassroots projects which allow people to help themselves. The Trust makes grants for small-scale projects across a range of interests that include agriculture, water supply, energy, and others. Grant recipients are development-oriented charities in the UK and internationally. There is no limit on grant size, but most grants are in the range of £200 to £1,000. Rainforest Action Network — Climate Action Fund. The Climate Action Fund makes small grants to community groups that active in preventing the extraction of fossil fuels, and in preventing or decommissioning large point sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Grants can be made in all regions, but the Fund’s geographic priority areas are South and North America. Grants generally do not exceed US$2,500. Applications can be submitted at any time. Link

 

Rainforest Action Network — Protect-an-Acre Fund. The Protect-an-Acre Fund makes small grants to protect forests, promote local self-sufficiency, and strengthen the rights and livelihoods of forest communities. Grants are to local forest communities, indigenous federations, and NGOs active in rainforest zones worldwide. Grants generally do not exceed US$5 thousand. Applications can be submitted at any time. Rapid Response Facility — Emergency Funding for Conservation. The Rapid Response Facility is designed to deliver rapid conservation funding in times of crisis, with a focus on protecting UNESCO’s natural World Heritage sites and potential sites. Eligibility for grants extends to agencies legally responsible for site management; registered local, national, and international NGOs; and the private sector. Grants of US$5 thousand to US$30 thousand are awarded for periods of up to six months. Applications can be submitted at any time. Link

Rare — Partnerships in Conservation. Rare addresses environmental threats in targeted regions of the developing world by building community support for conservation. Rare provides training, mentoring, and technical support to partners to manage Rare’s signature Pride campaigns in their communities. Rare currently supports programs in the China, Indonesia, Latin America, Micronesia, Mozambique, and the Philippines. Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Graduate Teaching Assistantships. RUFORUM’s program for Graduate Training Assistantships (GTA) announces support for 325 PhD training opportunities during the next five years. The GTA aims to improve the quality of higher education and increase the pool of PhD academic staff in RUFORUM’s member universities by facilitating cross-university PhD studies and teaching. Applicants need to be nominated for PhD training by his/her university. RUFORUM Secretariat assists in facilitating placement of the nominated staff to universities with the appropriate fields of the required training. The GTA accepts rolling applications (no deadline).  Rockefeller Foundation — Sustainable Development. The Rockefeller Foundation defines several initiatives and topics that guide its grant making. Those of principal relevance in the Terra Viva Grants Directory are food security in Africa; resilience to climate change; energy production and consumption; water and fisheries; and ecosystem services. Sahee Foundation — Development in Swaziland and Peru. The Sahee Foundation makes grants for agriculture, health, education, and environment in Swaziland and Peru. Sahee selects its partners among regional organizations that are well integrated in these target countries, as well as among local groups in Swaziland and Peru that are launching development project. Swiss National Science Foundation — Scientific Exchanges. The program Scientific Exchanges is aimed at researchers who want to host their own scientific event in Switzerland; invite colleagues from abroad for a research visit to Switzerland; or visit their colleagues in another country. For events, an important criterion is the participation of women speakers and young researchers. Applicants for scientific exchanges must be employed in Switzerland, and applications must be submitted at least four months before the event or visit. Link

Triodos Foundation — Support for Grassroots Development. Triodos Bank provides financial support for sustainable “green” organizations in sectors such as agriculture and energy. The Triodos Foundation focuses on grassroots projects in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, water supply, fair trade, and environmental protection. The international program also makes grants for health and education. Many grant recipients in International Cooperation are civil society organizations in the Netherlands in collaboration with partners in developing countries. Turing Foundation — Grants for Marine Ecosystems and Sustainable Land Use. The Foundation’s interests include marine ecosystems and protected areas, along with projects promoting sustainable agriculture and land use. Projects in marine conservation focus heavily on the Asia-Pacific Coral Triangle, but also include marine protected areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation’s funding for sustainable land use is oriented mainly towards West Africa. Most grants are to Dutch and international organizations that work with local partners. Turing does not accept unsolicited applications, but it invites brief project summaries. Link

United Nations University — Online Post-Graduate Course on Mangroves. The UNU’s Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH) partners with The Nature Conservancy to offer an online course in mangrove biology, ecology, assessment, management, and restoration. The course is predominantly aimed at young academics, professionals, managers, and other interested individuals — especially from developing countries. The course provides the opportunity for professionals to build their capacity without taking personal leave to attend classes. This open-access course has no fee. Link
